Temperature and Salinity Condition correlate with Eddy Variability in Halmahera and Mindano Waters

Abstract


The purpose of this study was to determine the condition of the waters around Halmahera Eddy and Mindanao Eddy both horizontally and vertically. The study area is in the West Equator Pacific Waters with coordinates of 20- 10oN and 125o-135oE. The data used are temperature and salinity data from Argo Float and current data from MyOcean. The method used in this research is the horizontal and vertical spatial analysis methods. The results of this study indicate that Halmahera Eddy causes the waters to move convergently, while the occurrence of Mindanao Eddy causes the waters to move divergently, so that the meter only moves around the center of Eddy's occurrence. The condition of the surface of the waters when the Halmahera Eddy occurs is characterized by increasing surface temperature and decreasing salinity levels. In waters affected by Mindanao Eddy, sea surface temperature conditions are lower and salinity levels increase. The formation of Halmahera Eddy will cause downwelling, while the formation of Mindanao Eddy will cause upwelling.
